The Diamondback Hook Hardtail mountain bike features a lightweight hand-built aluminum frame.

The SR Suntour XCM 120mm travel suspension fork absorbs shock as you tackle the most rugged surfaces, creating a more comfortable ride.

The bike’s Tetra Aries mechanical disc brakes give you plenty of stopping power when you most need it.

Its crankset features an aluminum arm and steel chainring. With the SRAM single ring drivetrain, this bike keeps gearing simple while also allowing for smooth transitions when shifting through various speeds.

The Hook 27.5 has DB SL-7 double wall wheels and wide 2.35 inch tires. That provides stability and buffer impact as you ride, making your excursions less bumpy and more enjoyable.

On top of that this bike has a front quick-release mechanism, that will make light work of swapping out your tires. You will appreciate this feature if you plan to ride your bike throughout the year.

The Hook from Diamondback comes in sizes 16, 18, 20 and 22 and fits riders of either gender who are between 5 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 4 inches tall.

PROS

  • Suspension fork absorbs shock as you ride

  • Extra-wide tires buffer impact and add stability
  • Customers report that bike is easy to assemble
  • Mechanical disc brakes provide powerful stopping on hills and trails

CONS

  • Unsealed bottom bearing allows debris to enter

2. Mongoose Men’s Tyax Pro Mountain Bike (BEST VALUE)

Specifications

  • Frame: Aluminum hard tail frame

  • Brakes: hydraulic disc brakes
  • Speed Settings: 27
  • Shifters: Shimano Deore/Alivio 3×9
  • Weight:

The Men’s Tyax Pro Bike from Mongoose is a rarity. You’re simply not going to find a lot of mountain bikes that are available for under $1500 that also make use of aluminum in its frame.

The Mason 2 from Diamondback Bicycles also features that material, but as we discuss in the buying guide, the usage of aluminum led to the price tag of that bike getting elevated.

The same is not true for this model. Attached to it is a way more affordable price tag that makes it more accessible to more buyers looking for a new ride.

You do not need to be alarmed by that lower price tag. It did not come as a result of the manufacturers cutting costs elsewhere.

Components used in this bike come from reputable providers and from getting the chance to use them on numerous occasions, I can tell you with confidence that they do not falter.

Multiple size options are still available, so take the time to select the one that is most compatible with your frame.

You may end up needing some extra assistance to assemble this bike, but you can easily deal with that issue.

PROS

  • Features an aluminum frame without being too pricey

  • Three size options are available for you to choose from
  • Remarkably lightweight bike that is good to handle
  • Drivetrain with Shimano Deore shifters

CONS

  • May prove tough to assemble for inexperienced mountain bikers

3. BEIOU BO-CB005 Carbon Fire Hardtail Mountain Bike

Specifications

  • Frame: BEIOU Carbon Fiber

  • Brakes: Disc Break
  • Speed Settings: 30
  • Shifters: SHIMANO M6000 DEORE
  • Weight: 23.6 lbs

The second BEIOU hardtail mountain bike in this article caters to a slightly different segment of potential buyers.

Considering that the size range of BO-CB020 Mountain Bike is 17 to 19 inches, larger riders are the ones who will want to take a longer look at this two-wheeler.

The frame is not the only reason for why this particular bike is a better fit for larger individuals.

You can also choose from two different wheel sizes if you decide to purchase this bicycle. The 27.5-inch wheels are solid options for different settings, but the 29-inch wheels are what you’ll need if you know you’ll be taking your bike out for longer rides.

Regardless of which wheel size you choose, you can be certain that they will last for a long time on your new bike.

The hidden disc brake installed on this bike does not engage as quickly as the vertical disc brake used in the BEIOU bike above, but don’t worry, it will still work as expected.

One issue that plagued the BEIOU bike above is also present in the BO-CB020, with that being the hard bike seat. Fortunately, that issue can be quickly addressed by just switching out the seat.

PROS

  • Suitable for larger individuals

  • Two different wheel options available
  • Carbon frame allows for easy maneuvering

CONS

  • Bike seat is too hard and can cause discomfort

4. BEIOU BO-CB005 Carbon Fire Hardtail Mountain Bike

Specifications

  • Frame: Beiou Carbon Fiber Unibody Frame

  • Brakes: Disc Break
  • Speed Settings: 30
  • Shifters: SHIMANO M6000 DEORE
  • Weight: 23.6 lbs

We’re starting with a bike manufactured by the folks over at BEIOU.

Right off the bat, you should know that you can get this model in three different sizes. This specific model being offered in 15, 17, and 19-inch frames means that it is more accessible to a larger segment of potential riders.

This BEIOU bike also makes use of a disc brake, which is a good thing. Since you’re already going to be keeping close tabs on this bike because of its material makeup, it should not prove difficult for you to monitor the brake’s current condition.

If you’re planning to head out on a hike sometime in the near future, this specific model will be able to serve you well.

You may want to test out the seat before taking it out for an extended ride though. The seat is on the harder side and it may prove uncomfortable for you to sit on for a long time.

PROS

  • Different sizes available

  • Carbon frame adds little in the way of weight
  • Durable disc brake installed on the bike
  • Shimano Deore M6000 gearing system

CONS

  • Seat is on the harder side

5. SAVADECK DECK300 Hardtail Mountian Bike

SAVADECK DECK300 Hardtail Mountian Bike

Specifications

  • Frame: TORAY T800 Carbon Fiber Frame

  • Brakes: Disc Break
  • Speed Settings: 30
  • Shifters: Shimano M6000 DEORE 3*10S Derailleur
  • Weight: 37 lbs

The safety of their riders is clearly something that the people over at SAVADECK had in mind when they were assembling the DECK300.

That is evident in its collection of components and will give you real pleasure in biking.

Let’s start with the brakes. The DECK300 also makes use of disc brakes, but the manufacturers have reinforced them.

The double mechanical disc brakes are going to stop you in your tracks as soon as you engage them.

Even when you’re riding very fast at a high speed, you can count on those brakes to lock on and protect you.

Also working to keep you safe are the handlebars. They are easy and comfortable to grip even during longer riding sessions and they will make it easier for you to maintain control of the bike at all times.

The carbon fiber frame is also strong and durable. Even if you accidentally fall down with it, you can expect it to remain in good shape afterwards.

Multiple size options are available again. For the frame, the options include 15.5-inch, 17-inch, and 19-inch frames. When it comes to the wheels, you can get the 27.5-inch or 29-inch wheels.

Bear in mind that this is actually quite a heavy bike, so remember to factor that into your calculations before selecting sizes for the frame and wheels. very fast

PROS

  • Extra safe bike thanks to the brakes and handlebars

  • Different size options are available
  • Uses low-resistance Michelin tires

CONS

  • Weight of the bike may make it difficult to use for some riders

6. BEIOU CB-024 Carbon Fire Hardtail MTB

Specifications

  • Frame: Carbon Fiber Frame

  • Brakes:  Disc Brake
  • Speed Settings: 30
  • Shifters: SHIMANO DEORE 6000(10S)
  • Weight: 23.47 lbs

This is the last BEIOU hardtail bike that will be featured in this article and similar to the ones previously mentioned, this is another quality product.

The BEIOU CB-024 shares many similarities with the two other bikes from that manufacturer that we have already talked about.

You are once again presented with an array of size options – 17, 19, and 21-inch models – and they are better suited for larger bike riders.

There’s not as much variety when it comes to the wheels though, which is a shame.

The people at BEIOU know how to properly put together their carbon fiber bike frames. It is a solidly built frame and it can withstand various dings and scratches without its performance being adversely affected.

The hidden disc brake has been used again in this mountain bike and that’s a good thing.

These aren’t hydraulic disc brakes but mechanical brakes, but they are very reliable.

The hardtail bike uses a Shimano Deore M6000 gearing system so you will have enough gearing options and enhanced rhythm and speed control. (1)

Unfortunately, the uncomfortable bike seat has also returned in this BEIOU creation.

  • Bike is designed to ride well for larger individuals

  • Features a quality carbon frame
  • Hidden brake installed will work great for a very long time
  • Shimano Deore M6000 gearing system

CONS

  • Bike seat remains uncomfortable and will probably have to be replaced

7. Steppenwolf Tundra Carbon Race PRO

Specifications

  • Frame: Carbon Fiber Frame

  • Brakes: Avid XX 180/180 mm
  • Speed Settings: 30
  • Shifters: SRAM XX shifters
  • Weight: 29 Pounds

Multiple options will be presented to you if you decide that you want to get the Tundra Hardtail Mountain Bike from Steppenwolf.

Specifically, there are four variants of this bike that you can choose from.

I personally prefer the Tundra Pro model simply because it’s loaded with the features that are best suited to my frame and riding style.

The wheels are right in the size range that I prefer and the triple crankset is highly responsive.

Unlike with some of the other bikes equipped with triple cranksets that I’ve used in the past, mechanical problems did not pop up that much while I was riding the Tundra Pro.

At first, it may feel a bit odd to sit on the Afterburner seatpost because it’s so light that you can’t help but think that it’s also brittle. That is not the case at all though and you can relax while you are riding on top of this bike.

Disappointingly, the handlebars are narrower than what I’m used to seeing on mountain bikes. They are still easy to operate, but having to squeeze your arms together more than usual can get uncomfortable in a hurry.

PROS

  • Variations of the Steppenwolf Tundra excel in different ways

  • Afterburner seatposts featured in some of the Tundra types is surprisingly durable
  • Good to use for narrower trails

CONS

  • Handlebars are not separated far enough and can be hard to operate at times

8. Raleigh Bicycles Kodiak 2 Full-Suspension Bike

Specifications

  • Frame: Aluminum frame

  • Brakes: Disc Brake
  • Speed Settings: 11
  • Shifters: SRAM NX 1×11
  • Weight: 33.3 lbs

We’re finishing up with the Kodiak 2 Bike from Raleigh Bicycles. Upon first glance, you may be able to tell exactly what this bike specializes in.

This bike is one on the list of the so-called full-suspension bikes.

Next to the front suspension, it features rear suspension that is designed to handle constant bumps in the road and falls from significant heights.

The wheels have also been reinforced so that they are not damaged easily even if you are trudging through the roughest types of terrain. It helps that it is also made out of aluminum so it really can take a good amount of punishment.

You may run into some problems that are related to the size of this mountain bike though. Even if you decide to get the larger variants of it, you may feel like you’re being squeezed into the cockpit.

That will take some getting used to. On the plus side, that is good practice for when you’re riding through a difficult trail as you will be less prone to falling over.

Despite its size, this bike does possess a bit of heft. You will also need to get used to that if you want to take full control over the bike.

PROS

  • Ideally suited for rough trails because of it’s rear suspension

  • Makes use of quality aluminum alloy
  • Wheels feature extra protection
  • Full-suspension bike

CONS

  • Smaller frame may make it difficult for some people to use

Mountain Bike Buyer’s Guide

It should come as no surprise that purchasing the right mountain bike requires more than just getting one that fits your frame right.

You also have to take into consideration the type of mountain bike you’re getting, the wheels, the brakes, the material used to make the frame, and several other factors.

In this buyer’s guide, I will highlight the important factors so that you can better understand which specifications are right for you.

What frame size do I need for my bike?

Arguably the most essential consideration, whenever you’re buying any new bike, is simply the fit. If the bike is too big or too small for your frame, then chances are you’ll never get comfortable riding it. You lose all the fun in biking and will soon have to purchase a different two-wheeler.

Even if you’re getting the bike for a teenager, it is not advisable to buy one he/she can grow into because the rider will be at higher risk for accidents during the period in which the vehicle remains ill-fitting.

What type of mountain bike do I need?

Though many bikes may look similar, there are significant enough differences in their frames and mechanisms that they can function better in specific locations.

There’s more than one type of bike on the market. Think about the fat bike, for example.  You can find all the info on the page about the best fat tire bikes.

Trail Mountain Bike

The trail bike is probably the most versatile variant of the mountain bike. Regardless of the type of terrain, you’re tackling, the trail bike should prove useful. If you’re planning to use your bike to ride through different types of locations, getting a trail bike is a good idea.

All-Mountain Bike

An all-mountain bike is a must-have for the people who are planning to spend the majority of their free time riding through nature trails. This type of bike is capable of scaling heights while also providing riders complete control on the way down. These aren’t the fastest mountain bikes, but they’re very rugged and are ideal to purchase for the more adventurous types.

Downhill Bike

Unlike the trail bike and all-mountain bike, downhill bikes are only designed for speeding and mountain biking down a trail very fast.

You will need an alternative mode of transportation if you want to go uphill first. These are great if you want to race down some terrain at fast speed. (2)

Downhill mountain bikes are full-suspension bikes. They are always equipped with front and rear suspension. The rear suspension is necessary to absorb the bumps and hits.

Cross-Country Bike

The cross-country bike is a well-rounded performer. You can take it out on the road with you and pick up some decent speed on the asphalt. You can also use it to conquer some hilly terrain. Expect your body to be pushed to its limits when you’re riding this kind of bike.

What material should be prominently featured in my frame?

The material makeup of your mountain bike plays a significant role in determining the two-wheeler’s overall quality. The material will affect the weight of the mountain bike as well as other characteristics of it, such as its durability and performance.

Because we’re focusing on the best mountain bikes under $1500, don’t expect to find many titanium bikes while shopping. While titanium itself is an excellent material, it is also quite expensive.

A bike made out of an aluminum frame is also a good choice because of its lighter weight.

But some mountain bikes that make use of this material still end up being a bit too pricey.

In all likelihood, you’ll see more steel and carbon mountain bikes as you’re shopping. Steel is the “most forgiving” and that it should remain usable as long as it doesn’t rust over. Its weight is a strike against it, though.

Carbon fiber bikes are durable and lightweight, and while they require a bit more maintenance, they are worth the extra work.

Which set of wheels do I need?

It’s not enough for the wheels of your mountain bike to be durable or well-made. If they are going to serve as great components of your mountain bike, they also have to come in the right size based on your preferences.

There are three main sizes of mountain bike wheels.

26-inch wheels are lighter, and they are better for executing precise maneuvers on a mountain bike. Put these on your mountain bike if you want to move faster through rough terrain.

27.5-inch wheels are better suited for moving over obstacles in your path, but if you’re looking for wheels that can handle long riding sessions, the 29-inch variants may be what you need.

What type of braking mechanism do I need?

The brake is an essential part of any bike, but not all mountain bikes use the same type of this component.

For the most part, manufacturers will either go with the mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes or the rim brakes.

Hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes can work well in any environment, and they also won’t deal with damage to your wheels.

The rim brakes are easier to monitor and replace, but considering how they can adversely affect the condition of your wheels, they may end up costing you more in the long run.

Conclusion

It wasn’t easy coming up with a clear winner for this article featuring the best mountain bikes under $1500.

But after weighing all the pros and cons as well as the money propositions of the different items, I’m going with the Diamondback Bicycles Hook 27.5 Hardtail Mountain Bike as my top choice.

The aluminum is a huge selling point and it really makes a difference in the bike. On top of that, the Diamondback Bicycles Hook 27.5 also handles like a dream and the brake is strong enough to keep you safe even if you were going way too fast.

You usually have to pay way more to get a bike that performs as well as what the people from Diamond are offering. And yet you won’t even have to break the bank to gain possession of the Diamondback Bicycles Hook.

Let me promise you this. This bike gives you so much fun, you will enjoy every ride!
